چکیده

A brief overview of the principles and associated instrumentation used to monitor polymerization reactions by automatic continuous online monitoring of polymerization reactions (ACOMP) is presented. ACOMP can be used as an analytical method in R&D, as a tool for reaction optimization at the bench and pilot plant level and, eventually, for feedback control of full-scale reactors. ACOMP measures in a model-independent fashion the evolution of average molar mass and intrinsic viscosity, monomer conversion kinetics and, in the case of copolymers, also the average composition drift and distribution. A summary of areas of ACOMP application is given, which include free radical and controlled radical homoand copolymerization, polyelectrolyte synthesis, heterogeneous phase reactions, including emulsion polymerization, adaptation to batch and continuous reactors, and modifications of polymers. Finally, a brief sketch of two novel complementary methods is given: automatic continuous mixing (ACM) and simultaneous multiple sample light scattering (SMSLS).  2007 Society of Chemical Industry

Online monitoring of polymerization reactions in inverse emulsions.

Automatic continuous online monitoring of polymerization reactions (ACOMP) was adapted to the monitoring of acrylamide polymerization in inverse emulsions. This is the first application of ACOMP to heterogeneous phase polymerization. The conversion and reduced viscosity were monitored by continuously inverting and diluting the emulsion phase using a small reactor sample stream and a breaker sur...

Simultaneous Monitoring of Polymer and Particle Characteristics during Emulsion Polymerization

Emulsion polymerization reactions constitute complex, nonequilibrium systems in which there is strong interaction between polymers, monomers, and the colloidal structures that mediate the reactions. A novel and general method was sought to monitor emulsion polymerization reactions. Instrumentation and methods were hence developed here to achieve, for the first time, simultaneous monitoring of t...

Monitoring the synthesis and properties of copolymeric polycations.

The kinetics; evolution of molar mass; solution conductivity, sigma; intrinsic viscosity; and average composition drift; and distribution were determined by monitoring the synthesis of copolymeric polycations of acrylamide (Am) and [2-(acryloyloxy)ethyl]-trimethylammonium chloride (Q9). The quantitative relationship between diminishing sigma and charged co-monomers incorporation was monitored f...

Simultaneous Monitoring of the Effects of Multiple Ionic Strengths on Properties of Copolymeric Polyelectrolytes during Their Synthesis

A new Automatic Continuous Online Monitoring of Polymerization reactions (ACOMP) system has been developed with multiple light scattering and viscosity detection stages in serial flow, where solution conditions are different at each stage. Solution conditions can include ionic strength (IS), pH, surfactants, concentration, and other factors. This allows behavior of a polymer under simultaneous,...

Simultaneous multiple sample light scattering detection of LCST during copolymer synthesis

This work has two objectives in the investigation of polymer solution lower critical solution temperature (LCST): First, to develop a new instrument to monitor LCST onset during copolymer synthesis by coupling several thermostatted light scattering flow cells to the output stream of an ACOMP system (Automatic Continuous Online Monitoring of Polymerization reactions). Second, to use this to inve...
